                         Pure Jazz

Although jazz has undergone many changes since its inception, some bands today play jazz almost as it was played at the turn of the twentieth century. The Early New Orleans Dixieland style had a great revival in the early 1940s. Prominent in this movement was Lu Watters and his Yerba Buena Jazz Band (based in Oakland, California). This band, like others in the movements, did everything possible to recreate King Oliver's style. The advocates of this style of jazz refer to their music as the "real" or "pure" jazz.
